Sun Metro Wins Regional Award

Sun Metro won the South West Transit Association Third Place Spotlight Award at the 2009 SWTA Marketing event for the SMART 101 marketing campaign in September 2009.

The Spotlight Award honors outstanding work for total mixed-media marketing campaigns that show a unifying strategy, purpose or theme.

More than 25 transit agencies from Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, Arkansas, Louisiana and Oklahoma participated in the annual event to exchange ideas and compete for the Spotlight and other awards recognizing successful marketing campaigns that build awareness or educate their community.

The campaign entries are evaluated on six categories:

  • success relative to cost
  • overall presentation
  • execution
  • style and content
  • quality
  • effectiveness

In March 2009, Sun Metro and the City of El Paso introduced SMART 101, a new route giving public transit riders a quicker travel option with dedicated bus lanes and streetlight synchronization. SMART 101 became the city’s first step to provide El Paso with a bus rapid transit system.

This new route reduces a 30-minute route to 11 minutes. The route’s efficiency is due in part to the special technology featured in each of the buses that allowed for the route’s traffic lights to be manipulated to either extend the green light or shorten the red light.

The SMART 101 has been so successful; Sun Metro created and recently implemented the SMART 103. The SMART 103 route provides limited-stop express service from the new Bert Williams Downtown Santa Fe Transfer Center to the intersection of Alameda and Zaragoza, Monday through Saturday.
