Road Closure Planned for Bridge Demolition
Work Part of Sun Metro Project

EL PASO, Texas – An existing pedestrian bridge along the Dyer corridor at Ellerthorpe Avenue will be demolished this weekend as part of the Sun Metro Brio Rapid Transit System (RTS) construction project.

The demolition work will require the complete closure of Dyer Street in both the northbound and southbound directions between Julian Avenue and Ellerthorpe Avenue. The road will be closed starting at 6 p.m. on Friday, March 9, through 5 a.m. on Monday, March 12.
Detour signage will be in place to help direct the traveling public. Anyone traveling on Dyer during this time should expect increased traffic congestion and possible delays and is advised to plan accordingly.
Fort Bliss requested that Sun Metro remove the pedestrian bridge, which is federal property, as a condition for allowing the Sun Metro project to proceed on federal land. The bridge does not meet the ADA design criteria due to excessive slopes.
The bridge will be replaced with a signalized crosswalk, which will be operational prior to the bridge removal. The project at that location will also include a safety zone in the median, new bus stop and shelter, improved sidewalks, new landscape and lighting. Upon completion, the Dyer Brio service will offer El Pasoans a high-quality RTS connecting the future Northgate Transit Center to the Downtown Transit Center. This $35.9 million dollar project will be approximately 11.4 miles in length.
Sun Metro boarding locations on Dyer at Ellerthorpe and on Dyer at Julian will remain out of service during construction hours affecting route 35. Sun Metro passengers are encouraged to use temporary bus stops at Dyer near Conzelman and Kemp near Dyer, and bus stops on Dyer near Titanic and Hercules. The Sun Metro staff will monitor the affected areas to assist passengers.
